Lefkada, like any other place in Greece, is rich in cultural events and noteworthy exhibitions, festivals and folk celebrations.
Local life is always lively with color and cultural interest. In the summer events and festivals thrive with the participation of many local and foreign artists, upgrading the island’s fun vibes.
Nightlife
Lefkada is not famous for its nightlife; yet, Lefkada’s nights are very alive and diverse. One may discover a plethora of restaurants and taverns by the sea, seemingly ideal for dinners. For ‘late-nighters’, the city center hosts many different kinds of bars and even dance clubs which stay open all night long. Very often, local nightlife is pumped up by the participation of Greek artists, performers and bands that organize pop up concerts, local festivals and special events.
Easter
During the Easter period, a lot of festivities take place. The Easter flea markets during the Holy Week, the traditional products market in Lazarata, the Good Friday procession of the bier of Christ in every village as well as the joining of all the processions in the city center, accompanied by the music of the Philharmonic orchestra, compose a unique cultural experience that is not to be missed.
May-June
May and June are equally culturally rich. One may visit the painting exhibition of the Ionian Islands, photography exhibitions, youth festivals, participate at the “Green” half-Marathon of Lefkada (21,1km), join one or more of the traditional folk festivals and the big Religious Festival of the Holy Spirit in the Sacred Monastery of Faneromeni.
July
In July, a Philharmonic Meeting takes place as well as painting exhibitions, the traditional threshing, the festivity of Saint Kyriaki and some more folk festivals. Furthermore, fests of speech and art are really substantial in the cultural summer of Lefkada. They were organized for the first time in 1955 and ever since, the annual program includes all manifestations of art. Throughout that time, a great deal of Greek and international artists have participated with huge success.
August - September
In August, the International Folkloric Festival holds an important place in the pantheon of Lefkada’s cultural events. It takes place unfailingly, during the last week of August every year since 1962 and offers unmatched appeal to the center of the city. Music and dance groups from all over the world participate in this event, making it a multicultural festivity, where people from all countries fraternize. Additionally, in August and September, there are also other events taking place all over the island such as the Fest of Honey in Dragano, the Fest of Wine in Sfakiotes, the Fest of Lentil in Egklouvi, the Traditional Festivity of Assumption of Holy Mary, the Barcarolle in the city center and in Lygia and the Book Fair in the city center.
